Hiding in dense undergrowth, the narrator hears a wolf's drawn-out howl, sensing an immediate, impossible connection. Already? It's barely been minutes since seeking shelter. A fleeting glimpse of moonlight reveals only empty forest before darkness returns. The scent of spring-damp earth and the rustle of a fleeing rabbit momentarily distract, leading to a mistaken belief it was merely a farm dog. However, another piercing howl, unmistakably wolf and unmistakably "him," silences all doubt, raising the narrator's hair. The sound resonates, demanding action. Despite the overwhelming realization of being found, the narrator attempts to focus, digging fingers into the dirt, a sense of being too late washing over them. Anticipating his arrival any second, the narrator hunkers down, attempting to slow their breathing, clinging to the hope that carefulness might still allow time.
