The front of the Red Earth Ice City was lined with ten spiked carriages, equipped with wheels. Like a mobile fence, the sharp stakes jabbed out defensively. A squad of shield-bearing infantry were up front, with a squad of archers with longbows trailing behind. They followed the spiked carriages into the Red Earth Square, their eyes alert, scrutinizing the towering red earth stalagmites. These earth stalagmites were wide enough for ten men to embrace, providing an easy hiding place for lurking enemies.
Two sluggish siege catapults and four ballistae were also dragged along, escorted by three mages, two priests and two clerics, leisurely trailing behind the front line.
Captain Gatuso was satisfied with his formation, his fingers tweaking his mustache, which was slicked with enough oil to catch the eye.
These Beamons also turned out to be somewhat clever, but Captain Gatuso had no intention of attacking head-on. The twenty blades’ stairway pointed at the largest cave mouth on the first-floor level. A view into the cave revealed nothing but shields and spears. If they chose to attack, due to the terrain, they could deploy only one squadron at a time, sequentially charging the enemy’s shield and spear formation. Such a reckless strategy, known as the oil-adding tactic, was not something Captain Gatuso would commit.
The Tornado Mercenaries’ three-pronged attack strategy was also completely within the view of the influential figures of Fei Lengci.
Both Liu Zhenhan and Daisy stood at the mouth of the fourth-layer cave, observing the movement of the Tornado Mercenaries.
"What’s that big thing?" Liu Zhenhan pointed at the slowly moving tower-ladder vehicle and asked Daisy.
"That’s a siege tower. It’s sheathed with iron at the front and has ladders at the back. Once it’s aligned with the city wall, the bridge at the top of the tower can continuously allow infantry to ascend the city wall," Daisy explained with a bitter smile, "As I had unfortunately guessed, the enemy plans to ascend the Red Earth Hill from both sides, then proceed to siege each layer of our caves from top to bottom, thus avoiding the fate of a head-on attack on the Steps of Death."
"Quite a crafty plan." Liu Zhenhan sneered.
As they spoke, the ten spiked carriages had already been pushed to the center of Red Earth Square. Their sharp and heavy stakes faced the stairway, forming a defensive fence line over two blades high. With the commander’s order, a squad of archers unleashed the first volley of arrows. Four ballistae and two siege catapults also launched their first rounds – for the sake of precision.
A shower of arrows thick as a locust swarm hurtled toward the first-layer cave occupied by Beamon forces. The collision of arrows and shields resounded, and under the force of machinery, some hit the surface of the Red Earth Ice City, sending ice chunks flying. Some lodged in the shields stacked up at the entrance to the main cave, deeply piercing through the thick shields, and cries of pain could be heard amidst the flying wood chips.
Throughout, no Beamon counterattacked. Even those Beamon archers in the third-layer cave had quietly disappeared.
As for the mouth of the fourth-layer cave where Liu Zhenhan stood, it had endured its share of the arrow shower. The human archers, outnumbered and overwhelmed, naturally didn’t let any live target escape. Read complete version only at novel✶fire.net
"Haha! Interesting." Fat Luo, standing behind his boss, held two large turtle shields in his hands. In his strong and towering grasp, they made for fine shields. When he saw a number of arrows heading in their direction, he clapped his two shields together and multiple dull sounds followed as the arrows were deflected.
Because of a minor injury, Fat Luo had been temporarily removed from the lineup and assigned as a personal bodyguard to the overlord. As of now, he seemed to fit the role. For this arrangement, Fat Luo had no objections; he knew his boss well. With him, they often ended up in the thick of the most intense battles - a position Fat Luo had coveted for a long time.
