Fifty million years ago, the Cambrian Explosion witnessed a sudden surge of evolutionary mutations, giving rise to a diverse array of complex lifeforms that became the ancestors of today's species. This era of rapid, "lightning speed" evolution, billions of times faster than modern rates, was remarkably brief. Following this "brilliant era," evolution slowed to a "turtle speed" for 56 million years, during which humanity emerged as Earth's dominant species. Now, a "second age" of accelerated evolution has arrived. During this new period of rapid change, humanity is swiftly dethroned from its position atop the food chain, heralding a second "brilliant big bang" for life on Earth.
