UYAI

Uyai, a name signifying Beauty, is deeply self-conscious about her appearance. Her tall, gangly frame, prominent cheekbones, small eyes, and full lips, coupled with a flat chest, are a source of shame. In a village that prizes curves and condemns skinniness, Uyai feels ostracized. Her sister, Affiong, is the village ideal, blessed with the desirable curves that easily attract men. Uyai becomes entangled when she attempts to assist two young men vying for Affiong's affection. One succeeds, leaving Affiong pregnant and devastated. Uyai then escorts her sister, who has been banished from home, to the city of Calabar. In this new environment, a series of overwhelming yet moving events unfold, leading Uyai to a profound understanding of her own name.
